Course Overview


This course will review the negative effects of hospital associated deconditioning on older adults. We will review evidence-based interventions to help counteract these effects while improving patients' mobility and independence with ADL participation and transfers. We will also discuss barriers with current medical devices and equipment available in the rehab setting to help improve safety and implementation of mobilization techniques.


The online class is intended for medical professionals (e.g. OT/OTA, PT/PTA, Physicians, etc.) directly related to the rehabilitation of a patient or client. To participate in this CEU and receive credit, the participant must be a licensed, treating clinician. Completion of this course will reward the participant with .1 CEUs or 1 contact hours, following completion of the presentation and a ≥ 80% score on the quiz. You will have 90 days to complete this course.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the common physiological changes that occur with immobilization and hospitalization.

  • Identify at least three red flags that can indicate higher risk of hospital acquired deconditioning.

  • List at least two evidence-based interventions to address deconditioning or frailty in the acute and subacute setting.

  • Recognize the most appropriate medical device, assistive equipment, or transfer device dependent on patient presentations.

Samantha Shields

Samantha graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 2018 and graduated with a B.S. in biological sciences with an honors thesis in kinesiology. She then earned her doctorate in physical therapy from Chatham University in 2020. Sam completed a Level 1 Pelvic Health certification through Herman and Wallace but enjoys practicing as a generalist, using her experience in orthopedics, vestibular/neurological therapy, and pelvic health to assess and treat the whole patient, taking into account the effects of multiple bodily systems outside of just the musculoskeletal system. Outside of work, she enjoys playing club volleyball, running, skiing, and training her dogs.
